  • Top-ranked kayaker builds “Hobbit Van” for life on the road

When Canada’s top-ranked whitewater kayaker Ben Hayward (vanstarter.com) decided to pursue his Olympic dream, he began a life on the road racing in Europe. To afford this itinerant lifestyle, he crafted a 72-square-foot wooden home on the back of a flatbed truck, dubbing it the “Hobbit Van” for it’s big, round door and butterfly-style windows. Hayward, and a friend from Wales, worked “7 straight days to source, insure, design, and construct every component for a homemade demountable camper”. His new home cost him 9,500 Canadian dollars (about $7,300 U.S.): $2000 for the truck, $1500 for the wood and $6000 dollars for the appliances, solar panels and wind turbine. The insurance was an additional $3000. “After buying the truck the first thing I did was spend 3 days trying to insure the th...

I also want an elk in the foreground to be sharp. I'm guessing the elk is 100-200' away. I'm bad at guessing distance. It's kinda dark so I want to use the widest aperture that I can get away with... without losing sharpness. What would a pro do? Guestimate? Rely on experience? Or do technical types exist that ...

Whether you call it drafting, slipstreaming, riding on a wheel or sitting behind others, it's a crucial skill if you want to learn how to ride with other cyclists. Here's how to do it! Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Get exclusive GCN gear in the GCN shop! http://gcn.eu/4l There are various terms for this particular skill. It may also be referred to as sitting on the wheel, sitting in, drafting, sat on, giving a tow and many more! Once mastered this skill, you can reap the benefits. It will have you saving you 30-40% energy compared to riding on the front in the wind, helping you ride further as well as gaining riding confidence. It's important to initially practice this as much as possible, start by riding approximately half a wheel (30cm) behind the rider in front, who has to be riding smoothly. As your confidence grows gradually reduce this distance until your front wheel is around 15cm behind the rider in front's rear wheel. Key tips: - Remember to keep your head up so you can see any changes in direction ahead. Don't stare in a trance like state at the wheel in front of you, just the occasional check to make sure of your distance. - Avoid heavy braking as it will require more energy to get back onto the wheel in front, it's better to feather the brakes to scrub off any speed. - The direction of the wind plays a very important part of sitting on a wheel, our graphics in the video show you just how to do it! How to Become a Professional Tennis Player?

How to Become a Professional Tennis Player? Tennis is a highly competitive and popular sport that many people around the world enjoy every day. But while most people enjoy tennis as a past time or a hobby, there are those who aspire to be a professional tennis player. Professional tennis, like other professional sports, is a highly competitive sport that requires dedication, persistence, and natural talent. If you are dedicated to going pro in tennis, there are many things you need to do to insure your chances of success on the court. Get in shape. Whether you’re a teenage player or someone in his or her twenties, you’ve got to make sure you are fit enough to compete on the court. This is because playing professional is extremely demanding physically and will push you to your limits and possibly beyond. Practice as much as you can. Practice is the only way to get better at tennis. In order to go pro, you’ll have to put in countless hours of playing tennis so that you can get an edge on future opponents. Make sure to use your available hobby or leisure time to supplement your scheduled practice time. Remember, as a professional player, tennis will dominate your life. Tennis, then, will dominate your life when you’re on the path to becoming a pro. Enroll in summer tennis programs, if you’re in secondary school or college. There are a wide array of summer tennis programs available to those in secondary school or college. Summer tennis programs will be immersive and will introduce those enrolled into the world of competitive tennis. Summer programs are an excellent way to gain experience, practice, and to get a foot in the door of the competitive tennis world. Compete in secondary school, if there is a program. If you’re in middle or high school and your school has a tennis team or program, make sure to sign up as soon as you can. Playing in school will give you the ability to devote extra time to practicing your future profession. Try to view school tennis competitions as a pathway to success and as a path to going pro. Engage in non-school related competitions. While you’ll be playing tennis competitively in secondary school, many of the best players also play competitive in non-school related competitions. This way, you’ll have two tracks to success and even more time to practice and gain experience. Win a college scholarship and play tennis for your university. While you’re competing in secondary school and in non-school related tennis competitions, you should also consider trying to win tennis scholarships to universities with good tennis programs. These scholarships will fund your education but also allow you to devote a lot of your time as an undergraduate to the tennis world. Adopt the approach and habits of top pro players. Top players do things a bit different than those they play against. Top players have approaches to the game and habits that set them apart from everyone else and help propel them to the top of the sport. Find a coach who has professional experience. Even if you practice rigorously, there's only so much you can learn on your own. Find someone who can help guide your training, whether it's a paid coach or a casual mentor (though you will eventually need to move to a paid coach if you really want to go pro).

3 Investment Formations to Protect you From Scary Stock Markets-LIKE THIS ONE! Although there are many ways to protect your cash from an unexpected event in the equity and bond markets, I would highly recommend learning (or hiring a pro who understands) about the three Defensive Investment Formations below. 1.) Buy Insurance for your Portfolio When someone buys a house or a car it is assumed and is often a requirement to purchase insurance for that asset. When you think about your investments ask yourself: Do you have any form of insurance to protect you from loss? What is the potential risk that your portfolio is exposed to? Could you sustain a 30-50% drop in your investment accounts? What kind of impact would a large drop in account value have on your lifestyle or future dreams? Have you thought about the need and or benefits of adding protection to your investment portfolio? There are a variety of ways to insure your investments, one simple example is called a Married Put, a hedging strategy named after an old IRS ruling. This happens when an investor purchases a put option contract while at the same time purchasing an equivalent number of shares of the underlying security. This type of strategy can be used when an investor wants the benefits of stock ownership but has concerns about the unknown downside market risks. Sounds simple right? So then why isn’t your advisor talking to you about these strategies while markets are at all time highs with a variety of economic and geopolitical concerns looming around the corner? Maybe it’s time to interview a new advisor….(Interview New Advisor) The equity and bond markets have been on bull runs for a very long time and as our last blog discussed there are several reasons why that run MIGHT come to an end. If you’re retired or nearing retirement and exposed to the equity markets, bond markets, or real estate markets I would advise taking a hard look at the pro’s and con’s of buying Put Options on those holdings because now when index options are cheap relative to long term history is the time to take action if action becomes part of your plan. Of course, with any investment or insurance there are pros and cons to this strategy. The purpose of this article isn’t to tell you to take action today, it’s to tell you to think for a minute and consider a solution that’s different than heading down a class 5 rapid without any oars. 2.) Buy Inverse ETF’s An Inverse ETF like ProShares UltraPro Short S&P 500 can work as a synthetic equivalent to buying Puts against you stock positions meaning it will benefit you in a market correction. SPXU will increase in value as the S&P 500 declines, in theory it will gain 3X as much as the S&P loses so if the S&P 500 is down 2% your UltraPro Short ETF should be up 6%. If the market stays in the same place SPXU will work better than buying Long Puts. In a flat market your $100,000 SPXU position remains in tact while the same flat market erodes the cost of your Long Put contracts. Assuming no adjustments are made, the Long Put Premium Premium (cost to buy them) will be lost like your car insurance payment. When working with leveraged ETF’s like this you MUST be sure to know your calculations and of course when in doubt ask for help from or just work with a pro like us (Click Here For Questions). http://www.proshares.com/funds/spxu.html 3.) Take Some Profits Ok, so you rode the market down to it’s lows and had the guts to ride it back to the current levels...will you learn your lesson this time? When’s the time to take profits? Should you hang on and pray? You can do what you want, but if you decide that the risk of a market crash is making your stomach turn why not take some profits? Listen, if you’re at or near retirement, or if you just believe in statistics… now is as good of a time as any to CONSIDER taking some (or maybe all) of your profits. If you decide to take profits it’s pretty simple. Login to your account (or call your broker) and sell (x) amount of your holdings. Chances are your broker will fight you tooth and nail, but if you made the choice and you know you can’t tolerate a 50% drop and you know a 50% drop would feel worse and impact you more than a 50% gain from here… then stand firm on your decision. Take some time on the sidelines and re-evaluate your choices. Note I wouldn’t recommend moving to bonds right now either, click the link below to find out why. Are Bonds Safe Investmentprofessor.com

“After buying the truck the first thing I did was spend 3 days trying to insure the thing. It was incredibly difficult to insure a crazy, wacky vehicle for a non-resident of the UK, especially because this was my first car I’ve ever bought, I have no driving record whatsoever.” With only a small nest egg, Hayward raised most of the funds through crowdfunding on his site vanstarter.com (he continues to solicit donations to cover living expenses). The tiny space was an easy fit for Hayward. “I live out of a suitcase so much of the year so I’ve been kind of doing this for a long time. For many years prior to this I was really trying to figure out what are the bare essentials that I need while I’m over in Europe for a month or two months at a time. I was like well I’ve got my bare essentials suitcase, it was really an additive process rather than a subtractive process.” Now when Hayward is back home in Canada he says he misses his house on wheels. AvaitorGM was watching my Tack Sharp photos series and highlighted something I neglected to talk about in those videos, which is the importance of the Hyperlocal distance! So AviatorGM’s though AviatorGM’s question wasn’t explicitly about Hyperfocal Distance, it is exactly what he was looking for. Here’s the question: “How do you figure the distance between you and your subject? Assume I want to make a wide angle landscape photo. I want the mountains in the background to be sharp. Or do technical types exist that would use a laser range finding scope as is used in golf, hunting, etc.? In short, you have to know distances between you and the subject(s) to use these calculators..Bottom line is you need to do some guesstimation for figuring out the distance of your subjects, unless you’re going to bring some sort of measuring tool, however with the Hyperfocal distance, you can insure that EVERYTHING from a certain point and beyond is in focus VERY easily. You need to do a bit of calculating, and the easiest way to do it is by using an app or the online depth of field calculator, and I’ve put links to app options and the online calculator below: Online DOF Calculator: http://bit.ly/1VzvaO4 iOS App: http://apple.co/1WIGF2H Android App: http://bit.ly/1VzvpbG --------------------------- SUBSCRIBE: --------------------------- Join the community and get your FREE Shallow Depth of Field Guide: http://www.selfhelpphotographer.com/ --------------------------- VIDEO COURSES: --------------------------- The Guide to Shooting in Manual Mode: http://bit.ly/shpguide Understanding Flash Photography: http://bit.ly/shpflash --------------------------------------------------------- DONATE TO SUPPORT THE SHOW! --------------------------------------------------------- https://www.paypal.me/heniadis ------------------------------------ JOIN THE COMMUNITY: ------------------------------------ http://selfhelpphotographer.com ----------------------------------- ALL THE SOCIALS: ------------------------------------ Google+: https://www.google.com/+SpyrosHeniadis Facebook: http://facebook.com/selfhelpphotographer Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/sheniadis Instagram: @heniadis Snapchat: @heniadis Twitter: @heniadis Portfolio: http://spyrosheniadis.com
